The department of Computer Science and Applications is one of the prominent departments in SJCET. Under the strong and able leadership of Prof. Rajesh Kumar V T, the niche Department has been striving for excellence ever since its inception. The dedicated and experienced faculty members, who are the backbone of the department, have been leaving no stone unturned to achieve the academic excellence and overall growth of the young IT aspirants.
A well-equipped computer centre is a pre-requisite for any department that imparts high quality technical training in Computer Applications. Our department has a well-equipped software computer centre and a hardware lab for the students to learn and acquire the technical skills at par with the international standards. In view of making the students employable, the department has taken adequate measures to bridge the gap between the academic curricula and industry requirements. The students are being inducted into the Industrial Practice Program with various IT companies including one at Techno-Park Trivandrum.
The computer lab has all the latest softwares in which the students are being trained. Apart from the proprietary softwares, we do emphasis on free and open softwares are also being used for the training purpose.
As the scope of MCA course is multi-dimensional, the student’s inclination and aptitude for a particular area is identified and are being trained accordingly, so the students become master in their area of interest whereby enabling them to position themselves in a competitive environment. Students are given ample opportunities to delve into Web Application Development, Mobile Application Development using Android, System Side programming, Device Driver Programming,Database Administration, Networking And application development using Java etc.
Majority of our students get the opportunity to work on the live projects as early as they are in their second semesters. We believe in “learning by doing“policy, making our motto “Theory Tempered with Reality” materialized. Keeping this in mind the department has taken necessary initiatives to provide ample opportunities to the students to acquire not only the theoretical knowledge, but to master in practical aspects also. The overall personality development and promoting the extracurricular talents innate in the students are also being taken care of.

The placement training is another major activities of our department. At times, The department organizes competitions for the students to inculcate a culture of healthy competition and team work among the peer groups. This also helps them to improve their motivational level to a great extent and the morale becomes high. Our students participate in National level competitions and bring laurels to the departments and the college.
The department has always been encouraging the students to get certification program with various agencies. We have been one among few colleges that conducts certification program from IIT Bombay. The entire students of MCA department have undergone spoken tutorial Based Linux Workshops and got certified from IIT Bombay under the NMEICT project of MHRD, Govt. of India.
